Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 To: AgEnto@listserv.montana.edu Subject: stink bugs in wheat From: Sue BlodgettJim Berg, from the winter wheat breeding program has noticed stinkbugs occurring in headed winter wheat (about 50% headed). We had some of these last year in the Triangle and since the threshold for stink bugs is relatively low, 3-4 adult bugs per 100 sweeps, it's a good one to be aware of. Last year stink bugs could readily be found on wheat heads, where they insert their piercing-sucking mouthparts and cause seed to shrivel. Three to four adult stink bugs per 100 sweeps with a standard insect sweep net may warrant an insecticide treatment.Heavy infestations during heading can damage kernels, and reduce yield and quality. Treatments with Lannate LV (7 day PHI), MustangR (14 day PHI), or Warrior TR (30 day PHI) should be effective. Mustang and Warrior are registered only on wheat.
